Ivan Binomigisha, a graduate of Business Administration from Kyambogo University saw a necessity in tapping income from other sources and as a result, decided to put his business skills into piggery.
He has since established a piggery farm in Buwambo, in Wakiso district, and it is something he does not regret choosing.
“The main aim of beginning this project was to increase on my earnings per month. Money from police isn›t enough so I went in for a soft loan from Exodus to set up this project”
To get his project started, Binomigisha acquired a loan from Exodus Sacco, built a structure and bought two best quality pigs of high breed namely a bore and a show. This was his start of raising 100 pigs in order to earn in millions.
He says that one piglet can produce between 10-14 piglets. With five pigs each producing approximately 10 piglets, one can get 50 pigs in a year.
He adds that when you breed them again at some point you will have 100 pigs and this will see you get clean money of almost 50% from the investment.
Ivan specializes in quality pigs of which each is sold at 100,000 thousand when it clocks one month.
The project sits on half an acre piece of land where he also plants bananas, vegetables, vanilla and practices bee keeping as well.
Besides earning additional income to support his family, Ivan has also trained and employed over 10 youths thanks to this project.
The market for pigs is available since the demand is too high. We supply it within Kampala especially Nakulabye. We sell about 300kg per month earning around three million in that period,” added Ivan.
While that already sounds good to the ear, the target for him is to supply weekly in order to maximize profits and attain his target of 100 million per month.
And who better to thank than the Exodus Sacco who have made this possible.
“I really appreciate Exodus which extends loans to us at a short notice. Within two to three days the money is ready for collection and I invest it accordingly. It has no pressure. With this investment, a loan of three years I can repay it within one and a half years,” said the delighted member.
The other part of the project that includes matooke also benefits from the piggery as the waste from the pigs is turned into manure on his farm hence eliminating banana wilt from his matoke.
Ivan intends to acquire another loan to develop a biogas plant to provide enough lighting and cooking on the farm to reduce costs of electricity and firewood.
He encourages police officers to make use of Exodus and start up projects that can help them add something to their earnings.
“We should not depend on salary alone, but set up something that can contribute to your income. Don’t get a loan to go and buy new clothes, no, invest it into something better.” Says Ivan
Ivan is a police officer attached to logistics and engineering in Kampala metropolitan.
